Problem
If your Kevo Plus gateway displays a solid red LED ring, this indicates that the gateway is unable to communicate with the Kevo Plus service cloud. When this occurs, remote lock and unlock functionality will not work.
Resolution Steps
Follow the solutions below in order, as each step addresses a common cause of the red LED condition.
Solution 1: Verify Your Kevo Plus Subscription
After November 14, 2025, all Kevo Plus users must have an active Kevo Plus subscription for remote lock and unlock functionality to work.
The Kevo mobile apps, wireless and web technology in Kevo locks, gateways, and services were created by UniKey Technologies, Inc. After surveying Kevo users, UniKey chose to continue supporting the Kevo platform and existing mobile apps.
Remote lock/unlock requires an active subscription ($12 per year)
Users without a subscription will lose remote access
The Kevo mobile app will continue to work at no charge for local (Bluetooth) operation
What to Do
Sign in to mykevo.unikey.com
Check your subscription status
-
Start or renew a subscription if needed
Once a subscription is activated, the gateway LED ring should change from red to green/blue within two hours. Remote lock/unlock should then resume.
Solution 2: Check Network Connections and Antenna
Ensure the gateway is correctly connected to your home network:
-
The Ethernet cable must be connected to a LAN port on your router, switch, or network hub
-
Do not connect it to:
A television
Other audio/video equipment
Another internet-connected device
A WAN port will not work unless explicitly configured as a LAN port
-
Ensure the black Bluetooth antenna is fully screwed in and not loose
Additional Checks
Unplug the gateway from power
Wait several seconds
Plug it back in
Observe the two small LEDs on the Ethernet port:
Network activity LED: should flicker green (indicates network connection)
Kevo service LED (amber): should flicker at least once during startup (indicates cloud communication)
If the activity LED is off, try a different Ethernet cable or a different LAN port on your router or switch.
Solution 3: Reseat the Network Cable
Disconnecting and reconnecting the Ethernet cable forces the gateway to attempt a new cloud connection.
Disconnect the Ethernet cable from the Kevo Plus
Wait 10 seconds
Reconnect the Ethernet cable
Observe the LED ring and the amber service LED
If the LED ring turns green/blue and the amber LED flashes occasionally, the connection has been restored.
If the red ring persists, continue to Solution 4.
Solution 4: Power Cycle the Kevo Plus Gateway
Power cycling reboots the device and triggers a fresh cloud connection attempt.
Disconnect the power cable from the gateway
Wait 10 seconds
Reconnect the power cable
Observe the LED ring and amber service LED
If the LED ring turns blue and the amber LED flashes occasionally, the issue is resolved.
If the red ring persists, proceed to Solution 5.
Solution 5: Factory Reset the Kevo Plus Gateway
If none of the previous steps resolve the issue, perform a factory reset of the Kevo Plus gateway and re-enroll it.
Refer to the Factory Resetting and Re-enrolling Kevo Plus Gateway instructions to complete this process.
Final Note
If all troubleshooting steps fail, the Kevo Plus gateway has likely experienced a hardware failure and will need to be replaced at your discretion.
Summary
A red LED ring means the gateway cannot reach the Kevo Plus cloud
Subscription status is the most common cause after Nov 14, 2025
Network configuration and cabling issues are the next most common causes
Factory reset is the final troubleshooting step before replacement
