Has your Kevo lock stopped working? The Kevo mobile app fails to connect to the Kevo lock via Bluetooth? Your Kevo Plus gateway (if you have one) is showing a red LED ring and you can’t lock/unlock your Kevo when you are away from home?
This troubleshooting document will guide you through potential problems and solutions. Let’s start with a better understanding of how your lock is behaving now.
TOUCH THE FRONT OF YOUR LOCK AND OBSERVE THE LED RING/BAR

Does the LED ring/bar on the lock front light up blue?
- If NOT, continue with BATTERY ISSUE? below.
- If it DOES, continue with LOCK HAS BEEN RESET? below.
BATTERY ISSUE?
⚙️ 1. Rule Out Battery Connection Issues
Even though the lock beeps, it may not be getting full power to the logic board.
Try the following with the battery pack:
- Use fresh, name-brand alkaline batteries (Duracell / Energizer — not rechargeables or lithium).
- Remove all four batteries, bend the contacts slightly outward (gently!) to improve tension.
- Clean the metal pads with a Q-tip and a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol.
In the body of the lock, there are metal tabs that make contact with the battery pack’s metal pads (shown in the prior picture). It is rare, but sometimes the metal tabs in the lock body need to be adjusted so they make full contact with the battery pack. You can carefully insert a flat blade screwdriver to gently “lift” the tab away from the electronics board. Be careful not to use too much force as it could damage the lock.
Reinsert the battery pack firmly and make sure it’s fully seated.
If you still only get the beep and no LEDs on the lock front, continue below.
If the lock beeps and the LED ring/bar lights up now, check if the lock is working properly again.
CABLE ISSUE?
2. Check the Data Ribbon Cable
Inside the interior housing, the Kevo has a flat black cable that connects the inside electronics to the exterior touch ring and LED.
Symptoms of a loose/broken ribbon cable:
- Lock still beeps (since mainboard has power)
- Front ring is dead (no LED, no touch response)
- Attempting to reset the lock does nothing, i.e. the lock does not beep
Try:
- Remove the interior cover (2 or 3 screws).
- Remove the two screws on the interior lock housing.
- Locate the thin black cable that runs from the interior unit to the exterior assembly.
-
Ensure the connector it’s fully inserted and the cable is not pinched or torn.
- If the cable is damaged or detached, the exterior touch sensor and LEDs won’t work at all and the lock will not function properly.
If that cable or connector looks damaged, you can check with Kwikset Support to see if a replacement exterior assembly is available.
LOCK HAS BEEN RESET?
3. Re-add lock to your account
It’s possible that you inadvertently reset the Bluetooth enrollment on your lock. Follow these steps to re-add the lock to your account.
- From the app’s main My Locks & eKeys screen, tap on the + (upper right for iOS and lower right for Android).
- Select Pair a Device.
- Choose the brand of your lock (Baldwin, Kwikset or Weiser).
- Select the lock type (e.g. Evolved, Kevo 2nd Gen, Kevo Contemporary).
- Use a different lock name when prompted.
- Follow the instructions and video tutorial for enrolling the lock via Bluetooth.
- If the app adds your lock successfully, that indicates that it had been reset previously. Feel free to rename the lock and check if it is working properly again.
- On the other hand, if the app reports a Device Already Enrolled error, your lock was not reset previously so continue with IF ALL ELSE FAILS…
IF ALL ELSE FAILS…
🔄 4. Attempt a Factory Reset
Factory resetting your Kevo lock is a last resort for trying to get the lock operational again. It can be a bit tricky to do, so watch the demonstration video on YouTube and pay very close attention to the instructions and do each step EXACTLY as described:
- Start by removing the battery pack.
- Press the Program button on the back of the lock 2-3 times.
- Press and hold the A and B buttons on the back of the lock.
- While pressing and holding the A+B buttons, insert the battery pack and wait for a full 12-seconds.
- Release the A+B buttons.
- If you have triggered the Factory Reset correctly, the lock will beep and after several seconds the front LED1 ring/bar will cycle. If that does not happen, start over with step 1.
- When the front LEDs stop, the factory reset has completed.
- Using the Kevo mobile app, tap on the + to add your lock back to your account. Use a new lock name if you did not delete your troublesome lock from your account already.
- When prompted, complete the software update for the lock.
- From the lock dashboard, perform lock / unlock operation to confirm the lock is functioning correctly. If locking and unlocking are not working and/or the Kevo app reports a "bolt jam" error, re-handing the lock is required.
- Re-send eKeys to any users who had access to the lock in the past.
1 NOTE: If the exterior LED ring/bar consistently does nothing in step 6, it’s likely that you are not pressing the A+B buttons fully. If you are doing it correctly, but the factory reset does not start, this confirms a deeper electronics board or connection failure.
HARDWARE FAILURE?
⚠️ 5. Signs of Main Board or Front Module Failure
If the black cable connecting the interior to the exterior is fine and factory reset fails, the front exterior module (touch ring + LED assembly) or main logic board is likely dead.
Common causes:
- Moisture got into the electronics through the exterior ring.
- Electrostatic discharge or a surge event damaged the electronics.
- Internal electronics component failure.
Since Kevo locks are out-of-warranty now and Kwikset has terminated support for Kevo locks, you might be able to find a working pre-owned lock on eBay. Alternatively, you could switch locks.
